Working at Height Safety

According to the health and safety executive (HSE), falls from height are one of the biggest causes of workplace fatalities and major injuries. When working at height you need to comply with HSE regulations WAHR – the Work and Height Regulations 2005. WAHR is designed to prevent death or injury when falling from height.

What does work at height mean? Work at height means work in any place where, if there were no precautions, a person could fall a distance liable to cause personal injury. Before working at height you must follow 3 step set out by the HSE:

• Avoid work at height where possible
• Where work at height cannot be avoided, prevent falls using either an existing place of work that is already safe or the right type of equipment.
• Minimise the distance and consequence of a fall, by using the right type of equipment where the risk cannot be eliminated.

The HSE working at height regulations must be taken seriously, failure to comply to these regulations can result in serious injury to personnel and huge fines to the business.

Who does the regulation apply to? The working at height regulations apply to anyone who controls work at height – this could be you if you are a contractor or factory / building owner. Choosing the right type of equipment to allow safe work at height depends on various factors.

• The working conditions e.g weather.
• The nature, frequency and duration of work.
• The risks to the safety of everyone where the work equipment will be used.
